Located on the south coast of Madeira Island, in the posh villa of Garajau, we find the beautiful Vila Echium.
Design by architect Van Belden, this Holiday Home was built about 40 years ago and includes two comfortable self catering apartments.
The top floor apartment has two bed rooms, sleeping 4 persons and the ground floor has one bed room, but with the possibilities for sleeping 3 persons.
The top apartment, with its classical interior decoration, has a terrace with view towards the sea and is surveying the garden. The more modern decorated ground-floor apartment has its own direct way out to the garden from the living-room and from the bedroom.
The garden is furnished for sunbathing. It has a lively pond with fish, frogs, turtles and water plants. There is also equipment for grilling.
The Villa of Garajau is just 5-10 minutes by car from the centre of Funchal. This Villa is inhabited by the upper middle class people of the island, residing in lovely villas with beautiful gardens.
This is a fairly quiet area. However, just two minutes by foot, you find some good restaurants, a take away, a supermarket and a bakery.

Location - How to get there
Garajau is near the main road between the airport and Funchal, 10 minutes from each place. The taxi fare is 10 Euros.
All what you need for your daily life comfort, shops, restaurants etc. can easily be reached by foot within few minutes. Just go through the archway (tunnel, see below) of the Hotel Dom Pedro Garajau and it is all there.
How to find the house
Address: Rua Tristao Vaz Teixeira 150, Garajau.
By taxi
The easiest way is to take a taxi at the airport. There should not be any problem with the address but for safety’s sake you could show it to the driver before you enter the car. If any problem, tell him to go
through the tunnel (arch-way) of the “Hotel Dom Pedro Garajau ”,
about 30 meters further on in the same street to the left is Villa Echium.
Driving your own car
As you leave the airport follow the signs pointing out the way to Funchal.
After about 10 minutes there is a road sign reading “Garajau”, exit no.15, and it is time
to leave the autostrada. This is in the Modelo Supermarket area and the Cancela
Industrial centre.
Take the off ramp into Garajau and keep to the left. Follow the hair pin bend into an
easterly direction and continue until you arrive at the first group of shops to the left.
Restaurant Franco’s is in the corner and next to it the bakery. In front of this on the
opposite side of the street is the Hotel Dom Pedro Garajau with an archway. Go
through the archway and you are now in the road where the Vila Echiun is, the first
building to the left after the first cross-street. The address is
Rua Tristao Vaz Teixeira, 150.

Dieses Haus war für uns die optimale Unterkunft: viel Privatspähre, super gepflegt, zentral gelegen und trotzdem sehr ruhig ( abgesehen von den Fröschen im Biotop ). Wir haben den Aufenthalt sehr genossen! / This house was for us the perfect property: much privacy, super well maintained, centrally located and yet very quiet (apart from the frogs in the habitat). Vi var to familier som leide Villa Echium fra 22.12.12 til 05.01.13. Vi hadde et kjempefint opphold! Vi er fornøyd med hus, hage og med Filomena som gjorde hverdagene enkle for oss! Vi besøkte Funchal i julehøytioden og på nyttårsaften, fyrverkeriet var strålende og byen pyntet til fest hele perioden!Vi nøt lang dager på stranden nedenfor huset, svømte i havet og var på tre levadavandringer blant annet. Dear Johnny, Thank you ever so much for your great hospitality and a most magnificent stay at Villa Echium. Your wonderful, spacious villa and beautiful, lush garden was just what we needed for our two-week holiday. The housemaid, Filomena, is extraordinarily service-minded and takes care of everything big and small and even provided us with a fully decorated Christmas tree! The shops in the immediate neighborhood provided us with most daily necessities and the 15 minute bus-ride into Funchal is no problem as soon as one learns that the departure times at the local bus-shelter refer to the terminal, not the bus-shelter. Hi Johhny, I thought i would drop you a note just to say how much we enjoyed our holiday in Madeira. Your Villa was the perfect place to be, beautiful and so clean! Philomena was very nice and worked really hard! Not that we were messy ha ha. Unfortunately we didn't see as much of the island as we would have liked due to my mum not being very mobile and i must say the taxi drivers were scoundrels! They wanted at least 20 eur every time we went to Funchal so we ended taking the bus when we could. We did find a really nice taxi driver on the last day, he normally sits on the main road near the villa. Only wish we had found him earlier. If we come back to Madeira i will certainly be hoping to stay in your villa again. sheila x2011-May-18 - Helena L
