High up in the hills of Madeira, surrounded by vineyards and with the sparkling sea on the horizont, lies the charming country House Quinta das Vinhas, untouched by the island’s development.

The main house from the 17th century has been carefully restored, without altering its original charm.

It offers 6 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, dining, living and reading rooms.

Antique furniture, flagstone and polished wooden floors, and hand painted tiles, create a special Portuguese atmosphere in this cosy holiday accommodation.

The bedrooms, furnished with antiques, are all different from one another. The 3 bedrooms on the lower floor lead directly onto a long terrace facing the garden and the swimming pool.  The 3 bedrooms on the upper floor boast lovely views over the vineyard and to the sea beyond.

The meals are based upon local produce and served in the old kitchen, where a water purification system generates great curiosity.

Lazy days can be spent in the charming garden, surrounded by tropical plants and fruit trees. Here there are always flowers in bloom. For most part of the year, breakfast can be served in this peaceful garden.

The patio with oak trees is an excellent place to enjoy an aperitif and the outdoor swimming-pool is very popular after a walk in the countryside.

All guests are invited to take walks in the vineyards as well as participate in the grape harvest.

How to get there? - Quinta das Vinhas - Estalagem

Instructions to Quinta das Vinhas:

We are situated on the West side of the island, about 40 minutes from Funchal, and 50 minutes from the airport.

From the airport follow the signs to Ribeira Brava up to where the motorway ends.
At the roundabout take the first right, you will go through a tunnel, which will lead you to another roundabout. Take the first right again into another tunnel (do not go into Ribeira Brava).
You will come out at another roundabout where you will take the second exit to the right, which will take you on a coastal road through Lugar de Baixo and on to Ponta do Sol, into another tunnel.
You come out of the tunnel onto another roundabout which has a sculpture in steps. Take the second exit to the right to Calheta (do NOT go into Ponta do Sol).
This will take you on a coastal road to Madalena do Mar.
After Madalena do Mar the road takes you through a series of tunnels. (Do NOT go to Arco da Calheta).
When you arrive at a roundabout take the second exit to the right. Sign posted Prazeres.
You will go through another 2 tunnels, and will see a signpost Estº da Calheta do not turn, keep going till you see the 2nd sign post, Estº da Calheta, here you turn right.
Follow this road for 0.8km, and very soon you see a large marine pine tree. The gate to Qtª das Vinhas is a few meters on, on the right, and in front of the new Health Centre (CENTRO DE SAUDE). The wall is painted in a reddish colour, with Qtª das Vinhas in tiles.
Drive down carefully on the cobble stones, and park your car on the left by the main house.

Quinta das Vinhas is on the Eastern side of Madeira, the part least affected by development, with easy access due to the construction of new roads. By car it is about 60 minutes to the airport, 40 minutes to Funchal and about 5 minutes from the coastal villages of Calheta and Jardim do Mar.
