Easter in Madeira Island
Easter is one of the most important religious events in the Archipelago of Madeira. This year, Easter will be held on 24th April. This has been called a moveable feast, due to the fact that it does not fall on set date every year. Each year, thousands of locals and tourists visit the rural areas to see the performance of the reenacting of Stations of the Cross, also known as Way of the Cross. It refers to the depiction of the final hours of Jesus Christ, this being a Madeiran tradition. Besides, you can always assist the various religious events taking place in certain parishes, namely Masses and Processions. Easter is also well-known for the delicious and unique gastronomy. There are many traditional specialties for this special occasion, namely the famous and delicious stewed lamb with wine and cinnamon, typical of Ponta do Sol civil parish. There is also another specialty, typical of Funchal, which is roasted lamb. Besides the religious traditions and unique gastronomy, Madeira and Porto Santo Islands also have traditional games, allusive to this special season. The most famous ones are “Balamento” and “Jogo do Pião” (Spinning top Game). Come and enjoy your Easter holidays in Madeira and Porto Santo Islands. This will be a unique and a lifetime experience!
