Municipalities Madeira Island

Administratively, Portugal is a unitary and decentralized State. However, it is highy centralized system regarding its administrative divisions, which are organized into three tiers. Portugal was divided into districts, municipalities and civil parishes. Only some of these civil parishes have political autonomy. The Autonomous Region of Madeira has their own regional political and administrative statutes and also its self-governing institutions. Nowadays, the Autonomous Region of Madeira is organized into eleven municipalites: Calheta, Câmara de Lobos, Funchal, Machico, Ponta do Sol, Porto Moniz, Porto Santo, Ribeira Brava, Santa Cruz, Santana and São Vicente.
