Canyoning, besides being a radical activity, is also a leisure activity with aim of surpassing natural obstacles, that is, mountains and hills in canyons and rivers.

This activity appeared in the 70’s and from then on, it has gained more and more adepts. Edouard Alfred Martel was considered the father of this activity.

Some of the routes are made near waterfalls and rivers, and also near exuberant vegetation. They even practice the activity in Laurel Forest.
The Laurel Forest was classified as a World Nature Heritage site by UNESCO, in 1999. There are species which are only confined to this forest. The most important ones are the Canary laurel, the Madeira mahogany, the southern olive, among others.
Madeira Island has several water courses which allow the practice of this sport. The most important and well-known are in Ribeiro Frio and Ribeira do Seixal.
Ribeiro Frio is one of the most wanted places to practice this activity. One aspect which makes this activity so exciting and thrilling is the fact that is has exuberant nature and landscapes as background. The route takes 3hours.
Descending the Ribeira do Seixal, there is a true contact with nature, landscapes, waterfalls, rivers, which makes a wonderful route.
The adrenaline and emotions will be the perfect combination for a great performance, despite the geographical and geological areas which will make this experience unique.
