Nativity Scenes in Madeira Island

Nativity Scenes in Madeira Island

Madeira Island will be hosting one of the biggest events of the year, that is, Christmas celebrations. It is also one of the most important events for Madeiran people.
This festive season in Madeira and Porto Santo Islands starts mid-November when the colorful illuminations are switched on in the main streets of Funchal, and ends on 6th January.
Rural areas are also magnificently decorated with Madeiran flowers, namely holly and lady´s slippers, poinsettias; allusive designs of Christmas season; people singing Christmas Carols, and of course, Nativity Scenes exhibitions. Thousands of locals and residents visit the rural areas in order to see the beauty of Christmas decorations.
Nativity scenes known as “Lapinhas”, or “Presépios”, are one of the attractions in churches, in private dwellings and also in public places, namely in Madeira and Porto Santo Islands. There are two kinds of “presépios” on the island. One of them is known as “Presépio em Escadinha” and the other one as “Presépio em Rochinha”.
Nativity scenes are usually displayed in a cave or in a stable. The figures representing nativity scenes are the infant Jesus, his mother Mary and his father Joseph. However, there are many nativity scenes including other figures, such as the Magi, also referred as the Wise Men, shepherds, and angels. The Wise Men (Melchior, Casper, Balthasar) are Kings from the East who have visited Jesus after his birth, bearing gifts of gold, myrrh and frankincense.
