Monuments, Churches, Chapels, Fortresses in Madeira Island
| Cathedral (Sé)
This magnificent monument is situated in Funchal city centre.
The beauty of the cathedral’s architecture derives from a blending of Hispano-Arabic and Gothic-Romanesque lines.
Built in 1514 by the master-builder Pêro Annes, on the orders of king D. Manuel, it has one of the most beautiful ceilings in Portugal, carved from local wood in the Hispano-Arabic style.
The bishop’s throne follows the Flemish style, while the main door is gothic, and the gilded decorative objects date back to the 17th century. There are even some examples of Portugal’s Manueline period in the architectural details.
