The Archipelago of Madeira is best known for its luxuriant vegetation, with magnificent and exotic multi-colored flowers and trees. There are many parks and gardens in Madeira and Porto Santo Islands, with a wide variety of plants and flowers. The most outstanding are orchids, magnolias, anthuriums, proteas, Poinsettia, azaleas. For the first time in Portugal, Funchal city was presented with a Gold Award in the 2000 Competition for the Greening and Flowering and Villages. Furthermore, there is an annual event which attracts thousands of tourists to Madeira Island, namely the Madeira Flower Festival.
