The parish of the good weather
The civil parish of São Martinho was established in 1579.
São Martinho is located west of Funchal city centre. It is spread over a large flat area of land, with the occasional slopes.
One of the most widely known viewing points in Madeira Island was built in São Martinho – Miradouro do Pico dos Barcelos, located 335 metros (1,099 feet) above sea level.
From this viewing point you can enjoy an incredible view over the city of Funchal and all its amphitheatre, from the sea and all the way to the mountains.
Most hotel units in Funchal, as well as a large part of the residential area of the capital are located at São Martinho.
Besides, it benefits from a privileged micro-climate, namely from the Lido area all the way to the emblematic Praia Formosa beach.
In São Martinho you will find the main public accesses to the sea, such as Lido, Poças do Governador and the long dark sandy and pebbly beach of Praia Formosa .
In economic terms, the largest shopping centre on the island is located in this civil parish: Madeira Shopping.
In addition, the main cemetery of the city is located in São Martinho.
There are more than 21 thousand people, who live on the 806 hectares (1,992 acres) that comprise the civil parish.
