Quinta Grande

The name of Quinta Grande civil parish is owed to a large property that the Jesuits had there. The Jesuits were Quinta Grande’s first settlers.  With time, it would end up by including the locality, which would later rise to the statue of civil parish. A considerable part of the land that today belongs to the ecclesiastic parish was formerly part of Ribeira Brava and Câmara de Lobos civil parishes. When, in mid 16th century, Campanário ecclesiastic parish was created, it became part of Quinta Grande within the of Câmara de Lobos jurisdiction. Quinta Grande civil parish, established on July 24, 1848, features Cabo Girão, which, with an altitude of 540 metres, is the second highest promontory in the world. Quinta Grande also has for you to visit, the mother church, as well as Vera Cruz and Nossa Senhora de Fátima chapels. Besides these places of interest, one should also point out the Quinta do Pomar farm and belvedere at Fajã dos Padres, which you can access by going down the lift. Once you go down, you can also go for a swim, have something to eat, or stay at one of the historic guest houses in the neighbourhood. Agriculture is the civil parish’s main economic activity.  The climate is mild, featuring warm temperatures for most of the year. Winter is harsher, particularly in places of a higher altitude.  How to Get There  To get to Quinta Grande from Funchal, take the freeway towards Ribeira Brava (Funchal - Ribeira Brava). Then, follow the road-signs
